What is PAN Card ?

PAN card is a unique identification in the form of laminated card, which is issued by Income Tax department (IT) of India. Full form of PAN is Permanent Account Number which is unique identifier assigned to every tax payer of India.

The reason behind issuing PAN card to tax holder is to keep unique identity of a taxpayer which is beneficial for both taxpayer and Income Tax department to assess the Tax.

PAN Card contains Name, Date of Birth (DOB), Passport size Photograph in case of Individual and 10 Digit alpha-numeric unique number i.e. PAN. Xerox copies of this card can be used as proof of identity or Date of Birth.

  • Yes, Aadhaar Card is mandatory document for PAN Card Application. Aadhaar Card fulfill all requirements of PAN Card application. It contains Name , DOB, Address, and Photo which fulfil proof of identity, proof of date of birth and proof of address. If anyone has don’t have Aadhaar Card then Aadhaar Enrolment receipt can be used as a proof of identity. In that case for proof of DOB and proof of address others listed documents can be used.

  • All Indian citizens who/which is having the source of income and valid proofs (as prescribed by the Income Tax Department) are eligible to apply for PAN card. A PAN Card is mandatory for every tax payer or the person who needs to file an income tax return on behalf of self or others.

  • You can apply for PAN Card after the age of 18. In case of student can also apply after completing 18 years of age. And in case of minor parents can apply of PAN card on behalf of minor.

  • There is no difference whatsoever between a normal passport and a Tatkal passport. The difference lies in the way they were made.   • Permanent Account Number is not a series of random numbers and alphabets. The structure of PAN has a quiet significance. Following is the Structure :

    First Three Characters: Sequence of Alphabets from AAA to ZZZ

    Fourth Character: Signifies the type of taxpayer

    3. C- Company

    4. F- Firm/Limited Liability Partnership

    Fifth Character: It is first letter of your surname. If a person name is Akshay Jadhav then his PANs fifth character will be ‘J’. In case of entity, the fifth character is first letter of name of that particular entity.

    Sixth to Nineth Character: Sequence of a numbers between 0001 and 9999.

    Last Character: This is an alphabet check letter.

  • If your income falls in the taxable criteria, not having a PAN card would result in :

    Flat 30% tax on your income and wealth, as stipulated by the Income Tax Department of India. This rule applies to individuals, companies and all entities which are eligible for tax, including foreign nationals and firms registered outside India.

    Not being able to purchase a vehicle, buy immovable property worth over Rs. 10 lakh, or open a bank account and not eligible to do transactions more than Rs. 50,000/-, among other activities.

    Businesses unable to conduct large transactions of their financial activities and procurement.
